It was a race with a personal mission for Leila Mattar-Leckie.
She wanted to give something back to Hospice Waiheke Homecare, who looked after her mother Barbara before she died eight years ago.
Leila lives with her husband Bryce in Epsom where they run an electrical business. Taking part in the first Great Auckland Bed Race in May was a good opportunity to raise some money for Hospice Waiheke Homecare to say thanks for the “wonderful care” given to her mum.
“It’s nice to be able to give something back,” Leila says.
The race involved 12 teams wheeling a purpose-built bed with a passenger around a 2.8km course. The bed and passenger had to be carried up more than 100 stairs by Trusts Stadium in Waitakere.
